Announcement: Pathway to Freedom

We are excited to announce that we have partnered with the highly respected Meier Clinic Day Hospital in offering an Intensive Outpatient Program using the renowned Patrick Carnes’ groundbreaking curriculum, Recovery Start. It will consist of 6 hours of psychoeducation and group therapy on Saturdays and 3 hours on Wednesday evenings. This program is designed to help the motivated person to get through the two most common pitfalls of relapse, namely 4-6 weeks after commencing their program and 4-5 months following. It is based on very recent brain research which shows that changing bad habits requires intense focus and effective structure in order to rewire the brain to automatically do the preferred behavior. Learn more about this by viewing the page on Intensive Outpatient Program.

About Me

I am a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT) credentialed through the International Institute of Trauma and Addiction Professionals (IITAP). I trained with Dr. Patrick Carnes, the pioneer in the field of sex addiction treatment and research, and Certified Sex Addiction Therapist associates. The CSAT is a clinical certification facilitated by Dr. Carnes and CSAT associates. Dr Carnes is the internationally known and respected sex addiction therapist, researcher and author of Out Of The Shadows, the seminal book on sex addiction, and many other books on the topic. In the CSAT training program I learned and showed proficiency in Dr. Carnes’ proven task-centered approach to treat sexual addiction.

I am licensed in the state of Illinois as a Clinical Social Worker with an M.S.W. degree from Aurora University. I have over 25 years experience working with inpatient and outpatient populations regarding issues of major depression, anxiety disorders, and addictions. I directed an inpatient program when I was on staff at the Minirth-Meier Clinic and Linden Oaks Hospital. Previously I served as a pastor and am still involved in leadership in my church. Currently, I am part of Mark MacDonald & Associates, a private practice clinic in Wheaton, Illinois. Together we have worked to create a vibrant recovery community through the establishment of support groups in the DuPage County locale for the sex addict, spouse, coupleship, and family. I am also on the staff of Bethesda Workshops, an intensive workshop for men struggling with compulsive sexual behavior. I have been married to Ruth since 1968 and have four grown children and six grandchildren.

My Therapeutic Approach

My principle world-view is faith-based. As a committed Christian, I have found that the Bible is unfailing in wisdom and is relevant to virtually every issue that comes up in life. Because of the many years of practicing the Christian faith, much of my treasure of principles, narratives, and therapeutic approaches comes from Biblical sources. On the other hand, I believe that much has been learned through the art and science of psychology and biology that is relevant to human behavior. I appreciate the work of scholarly men and women in the field who have added to the body of knowledge that brings practical help for those in need. Some examples: as concerns marital issues, Sherod Miller and John Gottman stand out as people who have contributed immensely to understanding just what differentiates a healthy couple communication from ones that lead to dysfunction and breakdown. Various addictionologists such as Patrick Carnes have provided needed understanding on the fine points of recovery. Daniel Amen is making tremendous discoveries on how important brain function is to almost everything we feel, think, and do. These and many others serve as resources for my therapeutic offering.
